Zermatt to Cervinia Over the Top

By road, Zermatt and Cervinia are some 230 km apart - there is no pass over the massif. By cable, they’re neighbors across one glacier saddle. That asymmetry is the whole seduction of this day, and it works when you respect its two conditions.

The legs

Zermatt to Trockener Steg by gondola, the Glacier Ride II across the Theodul Glacier to Testa Grigia (3,458 m, the border), then the Italian side’s lifts descending toward Cervinia. The Swiss legs run on the official ticket; the Italian descent rides the Cervinia system’s fares and, crucially, its operating calendar.

The two conditions

Season: the full pedestrian crossing depends on the Italian side’s lifts running - reliable in ski season, narrower in the shoulder months. The return: the mistake with a hotel in Zermatt isn’t going, it’s lingering - the top sections close earlier than valley lifts, and the last recrossing is the timetable line that actually matters. If the crossing is out

The border day has a weather-proof understudy: the Gornergrat railway (about $164) - a cogwheel train to the ridge that faces the Matterhorn straight-on, running in conditions that park every cable car on the mountain. Different day, zero Italy, arguably the better photograph.
